Headwaters Studio

Headwaters Studio is the creative classroom and working studio within Terrible Mountain Gallery, serving both adults and children while also functioning as the shared workspace of artists Colt & Jessee Maule. Located in Pitkin, Colorado—near the headwaters of Quartz Creek—the studio is grounded in the geography, rhythms, and quiet power of the surrounding wilderness.

Like the source of a river, Headwaters Studio is a place of beginnings and return. It is where creative paths are discovered, skills are honed, and artistic practices are renewed. For adults, the studio offers space to slow down, engage deeply with process, and experience creativity with intention. For young artists, it is a place where imagination is trusted, observation is learned, and creative confidence takes root.

As both a learning environment and an active studio, Headwaters invites participants to witness art as it is being made. Works in process by Colt & Jessee Maule are part of the space itself, offering insight into the rhythms, revisions, and patience behind meaningful creative work. Learning here is not separate from practice—it unfolds alongside it.

The studio blends field study with in-studio work, drawing inspiration directly from the surrounding landscape. Time spent outdoors observing, walking, and gathering informs time spent making, reinforcing a deep connection between art, place, and experience. This approach reflects Terrible Mountain Gallery’s core mission of reconnection and rediscovery—of nature, of attention, and of self.

Living near the headwaters carries responsibility. Headwaters Studio embraces the role of steward within a headwaters community—one that understands how small actions shape larger flows. The studio honors beginnings not as destinations to be found, but as places to be cared for, tended, and sustained through shared effort and attention.

Creativity begins here.
